'Pata Chitra' is an age old traditional genre of painting form of Bengal. 'Pata' means earthen pots and 'Chitra' means image. Drawing on earthen pots are still very much in vogue, but also often substituted for handmade paper, bamboo fiber products, etc. Mainly mythological characters, mythological stories in a series, are painted on 'Pata's. Once upon a time, 'Pata Chitra' flourished within the city of Kolkata in Kalighat, and now for many years shifted almost entirely in districts of West Bengal.
