Bangladeshis attend a colorful procession to welcome in the Bengali New Year at Shahbagh in Dhaka, Bangladsesh. Pahela Baishakh, the first day of the Bangla month, can be traced back to its origins during the Mughal period when Emperor Akbar introduced the Bangla calendar to streamline tax collection while in the course of time it became part of Bangali culture and tradition.
