People / The Chase

The village huts of the Purulia districts in West Bengal are mainly mud houses with thatched roofs. They heavily get damaged during the rainy season. So after the rains are gone, during the onset of winter, they arrange the Bandhna festival when the houses are repaired and ornamented with wall paintings. Although the practice originated from necessity, the Purulia wall paintings has now become a matter of research to art historians.
