The results from 2010 to 2013 archaeological research showed that Liyangan site is the home of the Ancient Mataram from 9-10 AD with a complex settlement components, i.e residential area, Hindu worship area, agricultural area, and a workshop area.
Volcanic material covers the site and the area surrounding Liyangan site between 6-9 meters and consists of a sequence of the eruption of Mount Sindoro, which include volcanic ash, hot clouds and cold lava. The presence of volcanic material as thick as this shows that the catastrophic eruption of Mount Sindoro is the main factor that buried the Ancient Mataram village of Liyangan.
