Culture / A Vestige

Since the introduction of gas oven, kitchen - the most important room in a Buddhist Ladakhi household - has undergone a complete make-over. One of the last few traditional ones still survive in Tiggur, Nubra. Locals claim the stone-made stoves were brought to the village by Balti traders more than four centuries ago. The woman to the left is making tea in 'gur gur', while the other is weaving a goncha, the traditional Ladakhi attire.
