I was halfway through shooting a photo essay about the Tengger tribe, and I noticed I was missing some intimate interactions so I decided to focus for a while on their daily lifestyle. Chess was quite a common way of taking a break for Tengger workers, so I just waited for the right background and characters to shoot. I prepared the flash, got close to a top window and also let the sunlight to come in through a door on the left, in a way that I was having three different light sources. The idea was also trying to catch the smoke of the cigarettes, essential part of the identity of social gatherings in the Javanese culture.
